Introduction and History of T.I. College

The college was opened at Qadian in 1944, with Hazrat Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmad as Principal.

After having been elected as Khalifatul Masih, in his farewell speech, Hazur said: " I have reared this college as my own child and the college will always remain dear to my heart." (These are not the exact words, but I have conveyed the gist of what he said.) The staff in the beginning included Prof. Akhwand Mohammad Abdul Qadir, Prof. Yahya bin Isa, Prof. Abdul Rehman Nasir, Prof. Syed Fazal Ahmad (who later joined the Indian Police Service and rose to the rank of an Inspector General). Dr. Abdul Ahad, who later headed the Fazal-e-Omer Research Institute) Prof. Mian Ata-ur-Rehman, Prof. Sufi Basharat-ur-Rehman, Prof. Chaudhry Mohammad Ali, Prof. Dr. Sultan Mahmood Shahid, Prof. Sheikh Mahboob Alam Khalid, Prof. Ata-ur-Rehman Ghani, Prof. Abbas bin Abdul Qadir, Prof. Mohammad Safdar, Maulan Arjumand Khan and Maulana Ghulam Ahmad Badhomallhi.

A historic photo of the first Convocation held on 2nd April 1950. It was addressed by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II, Raziallah. This rare photo has been provided by Dr. Abdul Karim, who spent a long time with the State Bank of Pakistan and retired as an Advisor to the Ministry of Finance, Govern, ent of Pakistan.

When the Principal Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad was arrested in 1953, Prof. Abdul Qadir acted as Principal during the period of his absence.

The photo below shows the principal being welcome back after release from prison. From right to left can be seen: Prof. Maqbool Elahi Janjua, Maulana Ghulam Ahmad Badhomalvi, Prof. Akhwand Mohammad Abdul Qadir, Prof. Abdul Qadir (acting Principal), Master Fazal Dad, Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad, Prof. Habibullah Khan, Prof. Mahmood Ahmad, Prof. Abbas bin Abdul Qadir, Prof. Basharatur Rehman, Maulvi Mohammad Din (Librarian)

Later the following additions were made to the teaching staff: Prof. Faiz-ur-Rehman Faizi, Prof. Habibullah Khan, Prof. Maqbool Elahi Janjua, Prof.Dr. Naseer Ahmad Khan, Prof. Mohammad Yaqoob, Prof. Hasan Zaheer, Prof. Mahmood Ahmad Hyderabadi, Mr. Motasim Himayatullah, Prof. Mohammad Ibrahim Nasir, Prof. Chaudhry Mohammad Sharif Khalid, Prof. Chaudhry Ataullah and Prof. Masood Ahmad Atif, Prof. Mubarak Ahmad Ansari, Prof. Mirza Majeed Ahmad. Mr. Abdur Rahman Junaid Hashmi, Chaudhry Mahfooz-ur-Rehamn (later DPE and Librarian) and Mohammad Ahmad Anwar (later DPE and Professor Islamiyat) were among the office staff in the beginning. Chaudhry Mohammad Fazal Dad was the fist DPE of the college. Many of us must have seen Chaudhry Mohammad Ahmad Boobak, Mahmood Aslam, Qureshi Mohammad Abdullah, Khawaja Abdus Sami,Zafar Mirza,Abdul Shakoor Shah and Tahir Ahmad Qureshi in the college office. It will be unfair not to mention our loving SHADI, who served the college, day and night when the college was at Lahore and later when it was shifted to Rabwah.(If someone could get me a photogrph of Shadi, I shall be pleased to put it on the website) Some of those who helped the Principal and staff were Rashid, Shamoon, Lal Din and Rashid. The college Tuck-shop was managed by Yousuf and later by...... (the names forgotten, if someone remebers, please let me know)..........Mr. Kanwar Idrees and Mr.Saeed Ahmad Khan Rehmani and Mr.Aftab Ahmad (all old students) remained on the staff for a short time. Dr. Naseer Ahmad Bashir also came for a year or so. Those of the former students of the college who served on the staff for a relatively longer period include Mr. Mubarak Ahmad Ansari, Dr. Zafar Ahmad Vains, Sahibzada Mirza Khurshid Ahmad, Chaudhry Hameedullah, Rafiq Ahmad Saqib, Chaudhry Hamid Ahmad, Mr. Hamidullah Zafar, Abdul Rashid Ghani, Chaudhry Mohammad Sultan Akbar, Dr. Nasir Ahmad Perwez Parwazi, Munawar Shamim Khalid, Seedullah Khan (Khalil Poultry Farm), Aslam Sabir, Syed. Habib-ur-Rehman (he was not our old student), Dr. Mohammad Sharif Khan, Abdul Jaleel Sadiq, Lutful Mannan, Abul Shakoor Aslam, Usman Siddiqui (not an old boy), Abdul Hadi Nasir, Qureshi Ijazul Haq, Chaudhry Aziz Ahmad, Mohammad Arshad, Mohammad Sadiq, Sultan Ahmad, Saood Ahmad Khan (not an old boy), Nazir Ahmad, Abdul Rashid Fauzi, Mohammad Aslam Mangla,Saeed Ahmad Chattha, Mubarik Abid, Anwar Hassan, Mobashar Ahmad Khan. The college had the honour of having Maulana Abul Ata Jalandhari and Malik Mohammad Abdullah on its teaching staff for many years. Maulvi Mohammad Din established the college library from the very beginning. From among the demonstrator one remember Messrs Mubarak Ahmad Madrasi, MunawarAhmad Chawinda, Dr. Ijaz Ahmad and Mohammad Aslam Qureshi. The writer cannot recall all the names and will gratefully accept and include the names of those he has missed. Under the inspiring leadership of it founder Principal, Hazrat Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmad, the college made a rapid progress in both academic and atheletic fields. The college hat some of the best debating teams in the University of the Punjab. Under the patronage of the principal and the leadership of Prof. Chaudhry Mohammad Ali the college Rowing team became the unchallenged champion of the Punjab University. Later when Chaudhry Sahib took over the Basketball club of the college, Prof. Chaudhry Hamid Ahmad worked hard and the college Rowing teams maintained their pround positions in both the University and the Board. When the post-gradulation classes started in the sixties, the college had the rare honour of having six of its students among the top ten in the M.A. Arabic examination. Post graduate classes in Physics were started a couple of years before Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad left the college as principal. With the untiring hard-work of Prof. Dr. Naseer Ahmad Khan the department of physics acquired some of the best science equipments in the country, of which even the Punjab University started feeling jealous. If our information is correct Fazal Elahi Anwari (later Maulana Fazal Elahi Anwari) was the first student to be admitted in the college with Roll No. one. Mr. Mujeeb-ur-Reham - Advocate, and Mr Abdus Sami Noon - Advocate are some of the earliest students of the college. Some of those who joined the college when M.A. Arabic classes opened include Chaudhry Mohammad Siddique, Librarian Khilafat Library, Masood Ahmad Jehlami (deceased), Hassan Mohammad Arif, Chaudhry Nasir-ud-Din (deceased), Mrs. Qanita Mujeeb and several other ladies. 10. Mahboob Alam Khalid, lecturer in Urdu

In 1945 Ata-ur-Rehman Ghani was appointed as librarian in Fazal-e-Omar Research Institute and Mian Ata-ur-Rehman from Bhera joined the college as lecturer in Physics.
In 1946 Malik Faiz-ur-Rehman Faizi was appointed lecturer in Economics.
In 1946 Yahya bin Isa left the college and replaced by Habibullah Khan as lecturer in Chemistry. The same year Abdul Rehman, lecturer in Persian also left the college.

As a result of partition of the sub-continent, the college had to leave India and come to Pakistan. During this transfer Syed Fazal Ahmad, lecturer in English left the college, because he decided to remain in India. He later joined the Indian police service and rose to the rank of Inspector General of Police.

After shifting to Pakistan, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II directed the college committee to look for a suitable building for the college anywhere in Punjab. The following buildings were visited and considered, as they had been evacuated by similar institutions: 1. Sikh Naational College, Lahore
2. Khalsa College Lyallpur (now Faisalabad)
3. S. D. College Rawalpindi
4. D.A.V. College Rawalpindi
5. D. A. V. College Lahore
But all these buildings were full of refugees and could not be occupied till they had left.

Before a final decision was taken in favour of D. A. V. College Lahore, the college was housed in a deserted building in the vicinity of F. C. College. Since F. C. College was short of staff, it allowed its science labs to be used by T. I. College with the condition that some of T.I. College staff will teach their students. Professors Sultan Mahmood Shahid and Habibullah Khan, therefore taught at F. C. College in return for permission to use their Physics and Chemistry laboratories.

The following additions were made to the college teaching staff in 1948:
1. Raja Maqbool Elahi Janjua, Lecturer in Mathematics
2. Mohammad Safdar, Lecturer in Mathematics
3. Mahmood Ahmad, Lecturer in Biology
4. Mir Mohammad Yaqoob, Lecturer in Mathematics

A brief history of the college

From Hamid Ahmad Chaudhry, President TICOSA

<> TICOSA>

      Hamid Ahmad Chaudhry

Our alma mater, the esteemed institution - Talim-ul-Islam College, where we have all studied, was founded by Hazrat Mirza Bashir-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih II, in 1944 at Qadian to fulfil the wish of Hazrat Masih-e-Maood Alaih-e-Salam, who wanted that people should not only learn true Islam, but also learn the so-called secular branches of knowledge, particularly the material sciences. This was a time when the then Muslim Ulema in India had alomst unanimously declared that acquiring Western Education leads to atheism. It was at in these times that Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, founded the Ali Garh Muslim University, in spite of vehement opposition from the Muslim clerics. Financial resources of the small Ahmadiyya community at the start of the 20th century were extremely limited. So the dream of Hazrat Masih-e-Maood could not materialise then.
But as soon as the finances of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat improved, the College started in the beautiful building that belonged to T. I. High School, for which a new building was erected. Most of the professors and the Principal, Hazrat Sahibzada Mirza Nasir Ahmad himsself, were Waqifeen (Life devotees).

Hardly three years had passed, when the college had its first major crises. The sub-continent was divided and the college had to vacate its building at Qadian. The the homeless college had to migrate to Pakistan. The determined leadership of its founder, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II, ordered that the college must resume its function immediately, whereever a shelter was found. So the college found refuge in an abanded building near the Forman Christian College. It looked like an animal shed, without doors and windows. An arrangement was made with F.C.College, whose principal permitted the use of his science labs and in return our professors taught their classes, since most of their own staff had left for India. The College authorities remained looking for a more suitable building. Soon an ideal place was found. It was the building vacated by the D.A.V. college, near Government College and District Courts Lahore. It was a good location, but since the buidling had been used as a refugee camp for several month, it was in ruins. It was adequately repaired and college had once again a comfortalbe campus. Thanks to the charismatic leadership of the Pincipal Hazrat Mirza Nasir Amad and the devotion of his colleagues, the teaching staff, T. I. College attained a position of respect among colleges affiliated with the University of the Punjab. Its achievements, both in the academic and athletic fields, were beyond expectation of a young institution with limited resources that had been rendered homeless within three years after its inception. But the college had to undergo still another test. The father of the college, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II, directed that the college be shifted to Rabwah. The financail means of the Jamaat were extremely limited, but the determination of its leadership was not. If I remember correctly, Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad, used to say that the Khalifatul Masih II, gave him Rs 50.000 for construction of the building and told him to ask for no more money. That meant the Principal had to use every penny sparingly. He decided to personally supervise the construction during the summer vacation. He used to stand in the scorching heat of summer, that threatened his health. He therefore purchased a sun umbrella. When the bill went for authorisation, the auditor objected that an umbrella could not be bought for the principal with the funds meant for construction. So stringent were the checks on spending the money of the Jamaat. Anyway, the college shifted to its new campus in Rabwah in 1954. Some of its staff could not shift to Rabwah and decided to remain in Lahore. Professsors Maqbool Elahi, Faiz-ur-Rehman Faizi, Abbas bin Abdul Qadir had were teaching in the Punjab University, beside being permanent members of the T.I. College staff. They decided not to come to Rabwah. Professors like Mohammad Yaqoob and Motasim Himayatull (both non Ahmadis) shifted with the college. But the college maintainted the tempo of its progress at Rabwah. Some photographs of the opening ceremony performed by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II are given on the website elsewhere.

Message from Hamid Ahmad Chaudhry, President T. I. College Old Students Association.

It may look reidulous to give two photos of the same person, but this is being done to enable viewers recognise the man, and secondly to request them to send two of their own photos with the message - a photo of your JAWANI and another of your NAUJAWANI. This double photo will be deleted from the site if it does not find acceptance. The Website is being divided into several chapters. Please click each one to see if there is anything of your interest therein. Some chapters may still be empty, waiting for relevant material. We need your co-operation to make the website more useful and interesting. Please Send your photos and messages to.
